In the quiet, rural landscape of Sinai, South Dakota, a day of target practice ended in tragedy for Steven Hanson, a 44-year-old Caucasian male. On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at a residence located on 217th Street near 457th Avenue, Hanson was engaged in shooting a pistol. The incident, which is believed to have occurred between the hours of noon and 5 p.m., took a fatal turn as he was walking back from his target.
According to the Brookings County Sheriff's Office,
the sequence of events led to an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. As Hanson attempted to cross a cattle panel fence, the pistol he was carrying inadvertently fired. A single shot struck him, leading to a critical injury. Emergency crews, including the Sinai Fire Department, Volga Fire Department, and Brookings Ambulance, were dispatched to the scene along with the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
