On November 13, 2023, law enforcement responded to reports of gunshots in the 4000 block of Gypsy Lane in Rapid Valley, a suburb east of Rapid City, South Dakota. Upon arrival, officers discovered 32-year-old Mercades Dahlvang of Philip and 33-year-old Steven Custer of Rapid City lying in the front yard with gunshot wounds. Both individuals were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City, where Dahlvang succumbed to her injuries on November 14.
