Serena Spider, 26, a Native American woman from Rapid City, South Dakota, was found late on the night of May 3, 2023, after gunfire shattered the quiet near the intersection of Lacrosse Street and East Omaha Street. Police were dispatched around 9:00 p.m., and she was discovered on the ground in the grass near the area between Lacrosse Street and Brennan Avenue.
She was rushed to a local hospital, but she did not survive the gunshot wound.
As detectives tried to stitch together what happened, attention quickly narrowed to someone they believed had been close enough to Spider to be more than a stranger in the dark. Duane Sierra, then 21, was interviewed by investigators from the Rapid City Police Department and the Pennington County Sheriff's Office; afterward, police said he was arrested and booked into the Pennington County Jail on a second-degree murder charge.
