On July 29, 1962, in Rapid City, South Dakota, 50-year-old Alberta L. Bowman was tragically killed in a murder-suicide orchestrated by her husband, John Cleo Bowman. John, aged 59, fatally shot Alberta and their two sons, 17-year-old Maurice Donald Bowman and 13-year-old Bruce Bernard Michael Bowman, before taking his own life. The incident shocked the local community and left many unanswered questions regarding the motive behind the act.
