W.C. “Charlie” Ricker, a 60-year-old White man, rode out from Casper in the raw Wyoming winter believing he was closing in on a gang of escaped prisoners and bringing order back to Natrona County. The jailbreak had shaken the region at the end of December 1901, and by January 2, 1902, Ricker and his deputies had tracked the fugitives to the Woodard ranch near Garfield Peak.
