On January 2, 1902, Natrona County Sheriff Wilson Charles "Charlie" Ricker, aged 60, was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend escaped prisoners near Casper, Wyoming. Ricker, who had been serving as sheriff since January 1901, led a posse to the Woodard family ranch, suspecting it to be a hideout for the fugitives.
