On January 2, 1902, 60-year-old White male, Sheriff William Charles “Charlie” Ricker, rode east of Casper in midwinter, following the trail of men who had slipped out of his Natrona County jail two days earlier.
At the Woodard family ranch near Garfield Peak, dogs barked and a match flared inside the barn. Sheriff William Ricker stepped out of the ranch house despite a deputy's warning, telling them the escapees wouldn't shoot a man who had treated them well.
