On January 18, 2017, Rolette County Sheriff's Deputy Colt Allery, 29, was killed in a shootout following a vehicle pursuit near Belcourt, North Dakota.

The incident began when deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. After a pursuit, the stolen vehicle was remotely disabled by a monitoring company. The suspect then engaged officers in a shootout, fatally wounding Deputy Allery. The suspect was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.
