On the evening of May 22, 2023, the life of 16-year-old James Moore, a young Black male from West Fargo, North Dakota, was tragically cut short by gunfire outside a Fargo apartment complex. The incident unfolded in the 4400 block of 9th Avenue South, where police responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 11:19 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Moore's body; despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A handgun was also found lying nearby.
The subsequent investigation by the Fargo Police Department quickly indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence but was connected to a drug robbery. Authorities believe that actions taken by individuals involved in a drug transaction ultimately led to Moore's death. Court documents later revealed that Moore had allegedly planned to rob one of the men of marijuana. The investigation suggested a complex and violent altercation involving multiple individuals who fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
In the days that followed, a series of arrests were made as investigators pieced together the events of that fatal night. Four men were ultimately taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Marcus Rexrode, 31, of Fargo, was identified as the individual who allegedly fired the shot that killed Moore and was charged with murder, among other offenses. Also facing murder charges were 41-year-old Marcus McCuin of Fargo and 19-year-old Fabian Scott of West Fargo, based on their alleged involvement in the incident that led to Moore's death. A fourth man, 36-year-old Tommie Trent of Moorhead, was charged with drug conspiracy. The arrests brought a measure of progress in the case, though the investigation was said to be ongoing, with the possibility of more arrests.
