In the early morning hours of August 3, 2025, the life of 20-year-old Elijah Hughes, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Fargo, North Dakota. The incident unfolded around 2:26 a.m. at a south Fargo apartment complex in the 4700 block of 16th Avenue South. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Hughes with mortal gunshot wounds.
A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Hughes was a resident of West Fargo at the time of his death.
The shooting that claimed Hughes's life was not an isolated event. It was the second of two fatal shootings that occurred in Fargo within a half-hour period, believed by authorities to be connected to an ongoing feud between two groups. The first shooting took place downtown, resulting in the death of another young man and injuring two others. While police investigated both scenes, it was stated that two different individuals were suspected in the separate but related homicides.
In the days following the shooting, the Fargo Police Department identified a suspect in connection with Elijah Hughes's death. C'Aundre Douglas, a 20-year-old with no permanent address, was located in Jamestown, North Dakota. After a brief foot chase on the evening of August 5, 2025, Douglas was apprehended. Evidence collected at the scene of Hughes's murder, along with video footage showing a car connected to Douglas leaving the downtown area and heading towards the location of the second shooting, linked him to the crime.
Authorities announced that C'Aundre Douglas would face a murder charge for the death of Elijah Hughes. His arrest also connected him to two other shooting investigations in Fargo from July of the same year. While another suspect was sought in the earlier downtown shooting, police identified Douglas as the individual responsible for the killing of Elijah Hughes at the south Fargo apartment complex.
