In the early morning hours of June 7, 2019, Jason Jay Allen Halvorson, a 38-year-old White man, was fatally shot in downtown Fargo, North Dakota. The incident occurred outside his "Texas Q Barbeque" food trailer. Officers responded to reports of gunshots and discovered Halvorson with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Sanford Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
An investigation into the shooting led police to identify two suspects, Kareem Byrd Jr.
and Charles Harris III. They were apprehended during a traffic stop shortly after the incident. A search of their vehicle produced two firearms, one of which was later determined to be a match to the shell casings found at the scene of the shooting. An autopsy confirmed that the bullets recovered from Halvorson's body were fired from that same gun.
According to police, the shooting stemmed from a verbal confrontation between Byrd, Harris, and Halvorson. Byrd reportedly told investigators that following the argument, he and Harris left, returned with firearms, and both fired multiple rounds at Halvorson. Harris, however, claimed he was not involved in the shooting itself. Both men were subsequently charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Charles Harris III later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in prison, while Kareem Byrd's case was scheduled for trial.
