In the early evening of June 24, 2024, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Fargo, North Dakota apartment complex, leaving a young Black man, 24-year-old Zion Brooks, dead from a gunshot wound to the face. The fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of the Arbors apartment complex, located in the 2200 block of 6th Avenue South. When police responded to reports of the shooting at approximately 8:17 p.m., they discovered Brooks lying on the ground with a significant facial injury. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation into Brooks' death quickly centered on 20-year-old Amire Logan, also known as J'Veonte Malike Logan, a resident of Fargo who was identified as a person of interest. According to Brooks' girlfriend, Diamond Coleman, Logan was the only person who had an ongoing issue with Brooks, stemming from an incident where Logan's girlfriend nearly hit Coleman with a car. She told investigators that Logan would continuously taunt Brooks whenever he saw him. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two vehicles, a silver SUV and an orange Jeep, speeding away from the parking lot immediately after the gunshot was heard.
Less than 48 hours after the shooting, Amire Logan was arrested for the murder of Zion Brooks. The arrest took place following a public traffic stop on 12th Avenue North in Fargo. Logan was a passenger in the vehicle, which was being driven by a family member. During the investigation, law enforcement executed multiple search warrants in both Fargo and Moorhead, recovering several firearms. One of the guns seized was the same caliber as the weapon used in the shooting, another was reported stolen, and a third had been illegally modified.
Despite the initial murder arrest, the legal proceedings took a different direction. The Cass County State's Attorney's Office announced that Logan would not be charged with murder at that time, but rather with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, as he was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior conviction. This decision came to light as court documents revealed a potential self-defense claim. According to witness statements, Brooks had approached Logan with a gun drawn just before the fatal shot was fired. A firearm was indeed found underneath Brooks' body at the scene. Logan reportedly called his mother after the incident, stating, "A guy put a gun in my face i did what I had to do Mom i shot him back i'm so sorry i am so sorry i love you." The investigation into Brooks' death was eventually closed. Logan later faced additional unrelated federal charges for firearms and drug possession.
