On August 12, 1896, in Blocton, Alabama, Deputy Sheriff L. Griffin Bass of Bibb County was fatally shot by an individual seeking revenge for his brother's death. The assailant had previously escaped from the Pratt Mines Penitentiary, where he was serving a sentence for murder. Following his escape, Deputy Bass joined a posse to apprehend him.
