On a Saturday evening in Montgomery, Alabama, the life of 39-year-old Carlos Jones, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire. The incident occurred on March 12, 2022, in the 1700 block of Upper Wetumpka Road. First responders arrived at the scene around 6:50 p.m. to find Jones with a fatal gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
In the days following the shooting, the Montgomery Police Department
announced the arrest of a suspect. Alabello Barrera, 21, was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. He was subsequently held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center. The investigation, however, remained active as authorities continued to piece together the events that led to Jones's death.
Further developments in the case revealed a potential name discrepancy or the involvement of a second individual. Authorities later identified 21-year-old Diego Barrera as a suspect in the murder of Carlos Jones. The United States Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Task Force is actively searching for Diego Barrera, who is described as a Hispanic male, 5'5' tall and weighing approximately 170 pounds. A $2,500 cash reward has been offered by Central Alabama CrimeStoppers for information leading to his arrest.
