On the night of March 4, 2022, a call about a car crashing into a house in Dothan, Alabama, led police to a homicide scene. Inside the vehicle, which had come to a stop against a residence in the 1300 block of Judson Street, officers discovered the body of Kevin Montrea Jones. Mr. Jones, a 36-year-old Black man from Albany, Georgia, was the car's sole occupant. He had not died from the crash but from a gunshot wound to his upper torso.
Investigators determined that Mr.
Jones had been shot while parked on the street. After the shooting, his vehicle traveled backward, crashing through a chain-link fence and striking a utility pole before finally hitting the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police stated that the suspected motive for the shooting was related to drugs.
At the time of his death, authorities had been searching for Mr. Jones. He had escaped from the Houston County Community Corrections work-release program in November of the previous year. According to reports, he had served only one week of a 10-year sentence for convictions of theft and robbery before his escape.
Within days of the shooting, Dothan police made five arrests. Alec Jamez Killingsworth, age 20, was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. A juvenile from Dothan was also arrested and faced the same charge as an adult, though their name was not released to the public due to a state law.
Three other people were arrested and charged with hindering prosecution in the case. They were identified as 43-year-old Nikesha Baldwin of Dothan, along with 22-year-old Kelly Victoria Arnold and 21-year-old David Sanford, both from neighboring Henry County. As of March 2022, the case against the individuals charged was proceeding through the court system.
