On a spring evening in Dothan, Alabama, a dispute between two men escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of Daniel Lanier Dawsey. The 31-year-old man was found unresponsive on the ground in the 100 block of Eugene Street around 8:30 p.m. on May 6, 2014. Emergency services transported him to Southeast Alabama Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries about an hour later.
An investigation revealed that Dawsey had died from a gunshot wound sustained during a physical altercation.
Authorities quickly identified Emanuel Bryant as the suspect in the shooting. Described as a Black male, 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds, Bryant was considered armed and dangerous. Two days after the shooting, on May 8, 2014, Dothan police investigators arrested Bryant and charged him with murder.
During the subsequent trial, a Houston County jury found Emanuel Bryant guilty of the lesser charge of felony manslaughter. Following the conviction, Circuit Court Judge Butch Binford sentenced Bryant to 35 years in prison. The victim's sister expressed that the sentence brought the family a sense of justice and closure, allowing them to shift their focus from the painful details of his death to celebrating the life he lived.
