On August 10, 1916, in Dothan, Alabama, Deputy Sheriff Lucious "Alvan" North, aged 30, was fatally shot while performing his duties. Earlier that day, Deputy North had arrested a man for evading train fares. Upon learning of his son's arrest and subsequent appearance before the justice of the peace, the man's father and brother became enraged and confronted the justice at his store.
