In Dothan, Alabama, the community was shaken by the death of 56-year-old Samuel Heath Robinson, a local businessman, on May 22, 2024. Robinson, a lifelong resident of Dothan and the owner of Dixie Fence Company, was discovered deceased at his place of business. His death, which the Houston County District Attorney's Office later confirmed, was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The circumstances leading to Robinson's suicide unfolded as law enforcement prepared to serve him
with 14 arrest warrants for harassing communications. An investigation had identified him as the individual responsible for sending a series of vulgar and sexually explicit letters to a woman, beginning in October of the previous year. The letters, which caused the recipient significant distress, were penned under the pseudonym 'the red right hand' and contained fake return addresses. The author of the letters indicated that he had been watching the victim from a distance, though no direct threats of violence were made.
Investigators were able to identify Robinson as the suspect after a neighbor's doorbell camera captured footage of his truck in the victim's neighborhood. Upon learning that his arrest was imminent, Robinson took his own life. His passing left many in the community who knew him as a calm and well-liked individual in disbelief, struggling to reconcile the man they knew with the details that emerged from the investigation.
