In the fading daylight of a Wednesday evening in Dothan, Alabama, the life of 35-year-old Samuel Jeffrey Gray was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On November 9, 2022, in the 800 block of Miles Lane, first responders discovered Gray lying in the middle of the roadway. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso, and despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Dothan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the
death of the Dothan man. Their efforts soon identified a suspect, 21-year-old Kevone Devontay Smith, also of Dothan. Warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of Capital Murder and two counts of Intimidating a Witness. After a period of being sought by law enforcement, Smith turned himself in to the Dothan Police Department and was formally charged. He was held without bond.
The investigation continued, leading to a second arrest in February 2023. With the assistance of the Headland Police Department, the Dothan Police Department located and apprehended 24-year-old Mia Aliyah Creech of Dothan. Creech, who was also a person of interest in Gray's murder, was initially sought on outstanding warrants for Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling and Criminal Mischief First Degree from a separate incident in September 2022. Following her apprehension, she was charged with one count of Murder in connection with the death of Samuel Jeffrey Gray. Her total bond for all charges was set at $190,000. Authorities stated that they did not anticipate any further arrests in the case.
