In Dothan, Alabama, on the evening of March 15, 2019, a tragic turn of events led to the death of 33-year-old Jeremy Rashad Sanders. The male victim was present in the 700 block of Monroe Street where a physical altercation broke out between two women. As Sanders attempted to intervene and de-escalate the fight, one of the women, 23-year-old Suctorah Ty'keymah Duncan, produced a handgun.
Duncan fired a single shot, which was intended for the other woman involved in the altercation.
Tragically, the bullet missed its intended target and instead struck Sanders. He sustained a gunshot wound under his left armpit. Sanders was quickly transported to SouthEast Health for medical attention, but he ultimately succumbed to his injury in the emergency room.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Suctorah Ty'keymah Duncan was arrested and faced serious charges for her role in the death of Jeremy Sanders. She was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. Her bonds were set at $300,000 for the murder charge and $200,000 for the attempted murder charge.
In March 2021, Duncan's case went to trial. After the presentation of evidence and testimony, the jury deliberated on the charges against her. The trial concluded with the jury returning a verdict of not guilty on the murder charge.
