In the quiet city of Dothan, Alabama, the life of 38-year-old African American male Rodney Fitzgerald Caliste came to a tragic and abrupt end on the evening of October 24, 2019. A Navy veteran who had served as a meteorologist, Caliste had since become an entrepreneur, with ventures in film production and dog breeding. He was discovered outside his residence on Woodham Road, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The scene of the crime yielded a handgun, though it was not immediately clear if it was the weapon used in the commission of the act. The man who reported the shooting was taken to the police department for a statement, but was not initially named as a suspect. Caliste's death marked the second homicide in Dothan in a matter of hours, unsettling the local community.
The investigation into Caliste's murder led law enforcement officials across state lines to Douglasville, Georgia. It was there, on January 15, 2020, that a significant breakthrough occurred in the case. Marcus Hubbard, a 49-year-old business associate and friend of Caliste, was taken into custody as he was leaving his residence. The arrest was the culmination of diligent work by investigators, who had spent a considerable amount of time in Georgia working with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Search warrants executed in the Douglasville area at the time of Hubbard's arrest also led to narcotics charges against him. Following his apprehension, Hubbard was extradited to Alabama to face the charge of murder in connection with Caliste's death and was booked into the Houston County Jail.
After a thorough investigation and legal proceedings, the case against Marcus Hubbard went to trial. In August 2025, a Houston County jury found Hubbard guilty of the murder of Rodney Caliste. The prosecution presented compelling forensic evidence, including blood spatter analysis which indicated that Hubbard was in close proximity to Caliste, within three to four feet, at the time the fatal shot was fired. Throughout the trial, Hubbard maintained his innocence and offered no motive for the killing of his friend and business associate. Following the conviction, sentencing was scheduled for September 2025, with Hubbard facing a maximum sentence of life in prison for the violent death of Rodney Caliste.
