In the winter of 2017, a long-simmering dispute over loaned property in Dothan, Alabama, tragically escalated, culminating in the death of 48-year-old Cornell Lamont Johnson. On the evening of January 16th, events spiraled out of control in the parking lot of Sandher's Grocery on Third Avenue. What began as a verbal altercation between Johnson and another individual took a fatal turn.
Following the heated exchange, Jeffrey Lloyd Culpepper, then 54, allegedly retrieved a firearm from his
vehicle and shot Johnson. The violence did not end there. In the chaotic moments that followed, a family member of Johnson's reportedly drove their car into Culpepper's vehicle in an attempt to intervene. In response, Culpepper is said to have fired multiple shots into that car, narrowly avoiding causing further injury.
When Dothan police officers arrived at the scene in response to a 'shots fired' call, they discovered Cornell Lamont Johnson's body in the parking lot. Several individuals believed to be involved in the incident were detained at the scene. After a thorough investigation into the events that transpired, which had been developing over several days, authorities arrested Culpepper.
Jeffrey Lloyd Culpepper was subsequently charged with one count of murder for the death of Cornell Johnson and one count of attempted first-degree assault. The investigation revealed that the deadly encounter was the unfortunate climax of an ongoing argument among all the individuals involved. Johnson, a husband, father, and grandfather, was a long-time resident of Dothan and a veteran of the United States Army.
