On January 16, 2017, 48-year-old Cornell Lamont Johnson, Sr., a long-time resident of Dothan, Alabama, was fatally shot in the parking lot of Sandher's Grocery on Third Avenue. The incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute over loaned property between Johnson and 54-year-old Jeffrey Lloyd Culpepper. On the night of the shooting, both men arrived at the grocery store, where a verbal altercation escalated. Culpepper exited his vehicle and shot Johnson, who was found deceased at the scene.
