Officer Charles Haggerty, a 48-year-old Irish-born member of the Mobile Police Department, lost his life in the line of duty on December 30, 1903. At around 3 a.m., Haggerty was shot and killed while investigating and arresting a suspicious person on Royal Street, between Government Street and Conti Street, just two blocks from police headquarters in Mobile, Alabama.
