On November 2, 1907, Assistant Chief Tom Thompson of the Talladega Police Department in Alabama was fatally ambushed after arresting three men for gambling. The men offered to lead him to a larger game, but upon arrival, other individuals were waiting and immediately shot and killed him.
In the aftermath, a posse pursued the suspects, resulting in a shootout where one suspect was killed and another officer sustained a leg injury. Two additional suspects were apprehended. Assistant Chief
