On July 22, 1936, Chief Deputy John J. Bryant, aged 30, was fatally shot during a labor disturbance at the Samoset Cotton Mill in Talladega, Alabama. The incident began when a sudden burst of gunfire erupted amidst the unrest, resulting in the wounding of over a dozen officers and workers.
