In the quiet community of Talladega, Alabama, the life of 18-year-old Damonte Battle, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short on the evening of May 26, 2019. The young man was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle at the Kimberly Gardens apartment complex. Despite efforts to save him, Battle succumbed to his injuries, leaving a family and community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to
identify a suspect, Javontee Marquel Tuck, a then 20-year-old from the nearby city of Oxford. Less than two days after the fatal shooting, law enforcement officers located and apprehended Tuck. He was taken into custody and formally charged with the murder of Damonte Battle. Following his arrest, Tuck was booked into the Talladega County Jail, where he was held on a $75,000 bond as he awaited legal proceedings.
The case against Javontee Marquel Tuck moved through the judicial system, culminating in a trial where the evidence gathered by investigators was presented. Ultimately, Tuck was convicted for his role in the death of Damonte Battle. For the crime of murder, he was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison.
