On February 26, 1918, Chief Deputy Sheriff John William Burk of the Talladega County Sheriff's Department in Alabama was fatally shot while attempting to arrest two men. These individuals were wanted for assaulting a policeman in Ironaton, Alabama, a few nights earlier, during which they had beaten the officer with his own pistol and retained the weapon. Chief Deputy Burk located the suspects in Talladega and, acting alone, sought to apprehend them.
