In the autumn of 1995, a sense of unease settled over Dickson, Tennessee, as family and friends of Virginia J. Jackson grew increasingly concerned. At 43 years old, Virginia, a divorced mother of two, was a familiar face in the community. On the evening of September 26, 1995, she was at a local establishment, Bronco's Bar. When it was time to go home, she discovered the local cab services had closed for the night. Jerry Ray Davidson, another patron at the bar, offered her a ride. Virginia accepted his offer and was last seen leaving with him in his red pickup truck. She was never seen alive again. A missing person report was filed on October 1, 1995, after her family had not heard from her for several days. The investigation into Virginia's disappearance quickly focused on Jerry Ray Davidson, a man with a known criminal history. When initially questioned, Davidson denied giving Virginia a ride. However, he later changed his story, claiming he had dropped her off in a grocery store parking lot. During a search of Davidson's truck, investigators discovered a shovel, a knife, and firearms, along with evidence suggesting a struggle had taken place. A few days after Virginia was last seen, her brother-in-law found a pile of her clothing along a farm road. This discovery led to a more extensive search of the area, where authorities found more of her personal belongings, including her pillow, hair clips, and cell phone. The search culminated on October 19, 1995, when two deer hunters stumbled upon a shallow grave off an old logging road near the Houston and Dickson County line. Inside, they found Virginia Jackson's body. Tragically, her head was missing and has never been recovered. An autopsy later revealed that she had likely been deceased within 24 hours of leaving the bar. Jerry Ray Davidson was arrested and charged with the kidnapping and murder of Virginia Jackson. The evidence against him was largely circumstantial but compelling. He was convicted of both charges and, in 1997, a jury sentenced him to death. Over the years, Davidson's case has gone through numerous appeals. His death sentence was overturned by the Tennessee Supreme Court, which ordered a new sentencing hearing due to his original defense team's failure to present significant mitigating evidence regarding his long history of mental illness. Although his conviction for the murder of Virginia Jackson has been upheld, the legal proceedings surrounding his ultimate sentence have continued. For Virginia's family and the Dickson community, the case remains a painful memory of a life cut short, and the full story of her final moments remains partially untold with the permanent absence of a crucial piece of evidence.
