In the early 20th century, a dedicated officer of the Montgomery Police Department, Thomas Walter Berrey, a 35-year-old white male, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. On the fateful day of October 5, 1910, Officer Berrey, a mounted policeman, was responding to a domestic disturbance call with his partner. As they approached the scene, a male suspect opened fire on the two officers.
Both Officer Berrey and his partner were struck by the gunfire.
Despite being mortally wounded, Officer Berrey demonstrated immense bravery by returning fire and seriously injuring the assailant. This courageous act was instrumental in the subsequent capture of the suspect shortly after the violent encounter. The community was left to mourn a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Montgomery.
The man responsible for the death of Officer Berrey was swiftly brought to justice. Following his apprehension, he was tried, convicted, and ultimately sentenced to death for his heinous crime. The sentence was carried out on April 4, 1913, when he was executed by hanging. Officer Berrey was survived by his wife and three young children, who were left to navigate a future without their husband and father. In a tragic turn of events for the Berrey family, his brother, Officer George Berrey, also with the Montgomery Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on October 19, 1919.
