Officer William F. "Happy" Murphy, a 30-year-old motorcycle traffic officer with the Mobile Police Department, was shot and killed in the line of duty on October 18, 1929. The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. when Murphy stopped a speeding vehicle on Broad Street near Conti Street in downtown Mobile. The vehicle, which was later found abandoned near Picayune, Mississippi, had been stolen in Jackson, Mississippi the previous day.
