On June 13, 1937, Deputy Sheriff Andrew Thomas Dutton, aged 45, was fatally shot while responding to a disturbance at a church near Moulton, Alabama. Upon arrival, he was ambushed and shot five times. Despite his injuries, Deputy Dutton managed to return fire, critically wounding his assailant. The attack also resulted in injuries to six parishioners, one of whom succumbed to her wounds a week later. Tragically, Deputy Dutton's 18-year-old daughter witnessed the entire incident.
