On a tragic Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 28, 2013, the lives of 17-year-old Black male twins, Johnathan and Jeremi Berry, were cut short in a violent home invasion in the Wylam neighborhood. The incident unfolded at their residence on Attalla Street, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
That evening, three male suspects forcibly entered the Berry home. The twins' mother arrived at the house shortly after, and upon seeing the intruders, she attempted to flee in her vehicle. The suspects opened fire on her car, causing her to be struck by a bullet and crash into a neighbor's yard. Fortunately, she was expected to recover from her injuries. Inside the home, the assailants shot and killed both Johnathan and his brother Jeremi before escaping the scene.
The Birmingham Police Department's West Precinct officers were dispatched to the area around 11:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire and a car crash. Their investigation into the double homicide led to the identification of suspects and subsequent arrests. The motive behind the brutal attack was believed to be robbery.
In the days and months that followed, investigators worked to bring those responsible to justice. Eventually, three men were charged in connection with the murders of the teenage twins. The suspects were identified as De'Aries Ruffin, Fredrick Goldsmith, and Brandon Johnson. The arrests brought a measure of relief to a grieving family and a community searching for answers.
