On July 2, 2017, 42-year-old Larry Duncan was fatally shot in Birmingham's Lakeview District. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when an argument between Duncan's family members and two on-duty city sanitation workers escalated into gunfire. Duncan, known for his peacemaking nature, was attempting to defuse the situation when he was caught in the crossfire. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
