In the early morning hours of a summer Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute escalated into gunfire, tragically ending the life of 42-year-old Larry Darnell Duncan on July 2, 2017. Duncan, a husband and father, was not involved in the initial conflict but was acting as a peacemaker when he was caught in the crossfire.
The fatal incident unfolded in the city's Lakeview District when an argument broke out between members of Duncan's family and two on-duty city sanitation workers.
As the confrontation intensified, shots were exchanged between one of Duncan's family members and one of the city employees. Duncan, who was unarmed and attempting to de-escalate the situation, was struck by multiple gunshots. He was rushed to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the shooting, authorities confirmed that both a city worker and a member of Duncan's family were involved in the exchange of gunfire. An internal investigation was to be conducted by the city to determine why an on-duty employee was in possession of a handgun. Friends and family remembered Larry Duncan as a beloved and well-respected man who was known for his peaceful nature. His wife, Brandy Duncan, described him as a 'stand-up guy' who always sought to resolve conflicts.
