On November 7, 1957, Police Chief Emmett C. Bright of the New Hope Police Department in Alabama was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a man on drunk and disorderly charges. During the arrest, as Chief Bright and another officer were trying to place the suspect into a patrol car, two men approached them with a shotgun. The assailants demanded the release of their friend and, upon refusal, shot Chief Bright three times, resulting in his death.
