William Lewis Moore, a 35-year-old postal worker and civil rights activist, embarked on a solo march on April 20, 1963, from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi. His mission was to personally deliver a letter to Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett, urging the end of racial segregation. Moore wore sandwich board signs that read "Equal Rights for All" and "Mississippi or Bust" as he walked along U.S. Highway 11.
