In the fall of 2019, the life of 18-year-old Kalab Blake Whitworth was tragically cut short. On October 27, the young man from Attalla, Alabama, found himself at a crowded house party, a gathering of over 100 people that would ultimately become the scene of his untimely death. Whitworth was an unintended victim, an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire when a dispute escalated into violence.
A single, random gunshot that also wounded a Crossville woman, ended his life.
The investigation into Whitworth's death quickly focused on a primary suspect, Kavion Delynn Smallwood of Centre, Alabama. Following the shooting, authorities launched a search for Smallwood, who was 20 years old at the time. He was subsequently located in a wooded area in Cherokee County and taken into custody without incident. Investigators determined that an altercation at the party led to Smallwood allegedly firing a weapon, with one of the rounds fatally striking Whitworth.
Following his arrest, Kavion Delynn Smallwood was charged with murder in connection with the death of Kalab Blake Whitworth. He was also charged with second-degree assault for the injury sustained by the second victim. Smallwood was booked into the Etowah County Detention Center.
In November 2021, Smallwood's legal proceedings took a significant step forward when he was indicted by an Etowah County grand jury on the charge of reckless murder.
