In the quiet town of Attalla, Alabama, a deadly encounter unfolded on the morning of October 7, 2025, forever altering the lives of a local family. David Loyd Smothers, a 40-year-old male, was fatally shot while inside his vehicle near the intersection of Burke Avenue and Osborn Street. The incident, which transpired at approximately 10:12 a.m., prompted a swift response from the Attalla Police Department.
Upon their arrival, officers were met by 64-year-old Arthur Reynolds of Foley, who
surrendered to them without resistance. Inside a nearby vehicle, authorities discovered the body of Smothers, who was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. Investigators soon determined that the man who had surrendered was the victim's father-in-law.
In the wake of the shooting, Arthur Reynolds was arrested and has since been charged with Capital Murder. He is currently being held without bond at the Etowah County Detention Center.
