Lieutenant Benton McLemore, a 56-year-old officer with the Athens Police Department in Athens, Alabama, lost his life in the line of duty on March 7, 1969. McLemore was responding to a call to check on the welfare of a suspect at the suspect's residence. The suspect, who was known to be mentally ill, shot and killed McLemore with a shotgun immediately after the officer knocked on the door.
