In the late afternoon of December 28, 2022, tragedy struck in Athens, Alabama, when 29-year-old Cameron Oshai Whitt, a Black male, was fatally shot. The incident occurred in the 2000 block of Aretha Drive, where police responded to a call shortly after 3:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Whitt with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported by ambulance to Athens Limestone Hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The investigation into the
shooting swiftly led to a suspect. That same evening, investigators with the Athens Police Department arrested 20-year-old Jordan Laron Turner. Turner, a resident of Aretha Street in Athens, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder. Following his arrest, he was booked at the police department and then transferred to the Limestone County Detention Center.
The legal process moved forward, and in May 2023, a Limestone County grand jury indicted Jordan Laron Turner on the charge of murder in connection with the death of Cameron Whitt. Whitt, known to friends and family as 'Cam,' was a 2012 graduate of Athens High School where he had been a talented football and basketball player. He was also an active member of the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church, where he participated in the youth choir. His death left a void in the community, where he was remembered for his athletic abilities and compassionate nature.
