In the early morning hours of December 5, 2015, a gathering at Xtreme Performance on York Lane in Athens, Alabama, turned fatal for 24-year-old Zachori Keith Blackwell. The male victim was at a party when an argument erupted between him and his wife. Witnesses reported that Blackwell, who was intoxicated, became physical with his wife and also struck two other individuals.
As the situation escalated, Blackwell attempted to leave the party with his wife.
In an effort to prevent him from driving while intoxicated, another man at the party, Randall James Townsend, used his truck to block Blackwell's vehicle. This led to a physical confrontation between the two men, during which Blackwell reportedly pushed Townsend to the ground. After being pushed down, Townsend retrieved a handgun that was in the front pocket of his hoodie and shot Blackwell multiple times.
Following the shooting, Randall James Townsend, who was 21 at the time, was arrested and charged with murder. He was held at the Limestone County Jail on a $20,000 bond. In April 2016, a Limestone County grand jury indicted Townsend on the murder charge. However, following a three-day trial in November 2019, a jury found Townsend guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. Under state law, a manslaughter conviction is applicable when a death occurs in what would typically be considered murder, but was a result of a 'sudden heat of passion caused by provocation recognized by law.' Townsend faced a sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison for the Class B felony.
