On the evening of May 11, 2020, in a residential neighborhood in Athens, Alabama, an argument between neighbors turned deadly, claiming the life of 33-year-old Joey Sutton, a white male. The dispute began when Travis Lee Stanley, 41, became angry with Sutton's young son for riding his bicycle down Mill Valley Drive. This initial confrontation escalated when Sutton walked over to Stanley's residence to address the issue.
The verbal altercation in Stanley's front yard quickly intensified. In a tragic turn of events, Stanley allegedly first assaulted Sutton. When Sutton defended himself, Stanley produced a pistol and shot him. The shooting occurred in the presence of Sutton's own child. Deputies arrived at the scene around 6:00 p.m. to find Sutton deceased in a driveway from apparent gunshot wounds.
Authorities promptly arrested Travis Lee Stanley in connection with the fatal shooting. Initially charged with murder, the gravity of the circumstances led to the charge being upgraded to capital murder, largely because the crime was committed in the presence of the victim's child. Stanley was subsequently held in the Limestone County Jail without bond. The investigation also led to the arrest of Stanley's wife, Christina Stanley, on unrelated drug charges following a search of their home. An arraignment for Travis Lee Stanley was scheduled for August 12, 2022, as the community and Sutton's family, including his wife and son, began their long wait for justice.
