On October 31, 2005, in Athens, Alabama, 80-year-old Charles Newman, a World War II veteran, was murdered in his home. Andrew Lackey, a 22-year-old acquaintance of Newman's grandson, broke into Newman's residence that Halloween night, seeking a rumored vault containing cash and gold bars. During the intrusion, Newman managed to call 911, during which he was heard pleading, "Leave me alone" and "What do you want?" Lackey repeatedly demanded to know the vault's location.
