On a grim Halloween night in 2005, in the quiet town of Athens, Alabama, 80-year-old Charles Newman, a male veteran, fell victim to a brutal home invasion that ended his life. The perpetrator, Andrew Lackey, was driven by a false belief that Newman, the estranged grandfather of a close friend, was a wealthy man with a hidden vault of gold and cash.
For ten months, Lackey meticulously planned the robbery, a scheme that would ultimately lead to a tragic and violent confrontation.
The evening of October 31st, Lackey, armed with a knife, broke into Newman's residence on Hine Street North. Alerted by the intrusion, Newman was able to make a distress call to 911. During the recorded call, Lackey can be heard demanding the location of the non-existent vault. As the situation escalated, Newman, in an act of self-defense, armed himself with a. 38 revolver and shot Lackey in the chest. In a frenzied response, Lackey overpowered the elderly man, stabbing him dozens of times and also shooting him with his own gun. An autopsy would later reveal the extent of the brutal attack, citing 54 stab wounds and lacerations.
After fleeing the scene, a wounded Lackey sought medical attention at a nearby convenience store, where he was soon apprehended by authorities who had been alerted to the murder at Newman's home. His subsequent trial in March 2008 resulted in a conviction for capital murder and a sentence of death. Five years later, on July 25, 2013, after dropping all of his appeals, Andrew Lackey was executed by lethal injection for the murder of Charles Newman.
