On June 13, 1918, Chief Deputy James Henry Eubank of the Limestone County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally shot while pursuing an assault suspect. At 36 years old, with three years of service, Eubank was investigating a report that the fugitive was hiding in a house approximately five miles west of Athens. Upon entering the residence, he was met with a shotgun blast at point-blank range to the right side of his chest, resulting in his immediate death.
