In the winter of 2004, a tragedy unfolded in the quiet town of Athens, Alabama, forever marking the community. Larry Wayne Russell, a 42-year-old Sergeant with the Athens Police Department, found his life cut short in a sudden and violent ambush. On January 2nd, what began as a response to a seemingly routine call escalated into a deadly confrontation that would also claim the life of a fellow officer.
Russell, a respected member of the force, was a man dedicated to his community, a role he had fulfilled for 19 years.
The events of that fateful day were set in motion by Farron Barksdale, a 30-year-old man with a known history of mental illness. Barksdale made a call to the police, requesting to speak with an officer. The first to arrive at Barksdale's Horton Street residence was Officer Tony Mims. As he pulled into the driveway, Barksdale opened fire from inside his home, tragically killing Mims before he could even exit his patrol car. Moments later, Sergeant Larry Wayne Russell arrived at the scene. As he was getting out of his vehicle, he too was ambushed and fatally shot by Barksdale.
Following the shootings, Barksdale exited his home and lay down in the middle of the street, where he was subdued by neighbors until additional officers arrived and took him into custody without further incident. The investigation that followed revealed a troubled individual who had lured the officers to their deaths.
Farron Barksdale was subsequently charged with capital murder for the deaths of Sergeant Russell and Officer Mims. In the ensuing legal proceedings, he ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges. In exchange for his plea, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, Barksdale's time in custody was short-lived. Not long after being transferred to a correctional facility, he was found unconscious in his cell and died in a hospital. An autopsy later determined that his death was the result of natural causes. The community was left to mourn the loss of two dedicated officers, their lives taken in a senseless act of violence.
