Curtis Daniel “Danny” Bates, a 74-year-old man from Athens, Alabama, died on April 10, 2026, inside his home in the Watercress Subdivision. Athens police were called to a residence near Blair Road and Watercress Drive at about 9:30 that Friday morning, and what began as a call for service quickly became a death investigation when officers found two adults dead inside the home.
The Limestone County Coroner’s Office later identified the victims as Curtis Bates and 57-year-old Sabrina Bates, and confirmed that both had been shot.
The home sat in a residential area of west Athens, west of Lucas Ferry Road, in a neighborhood described in reports as quiet and residential. Police secured the area as an active crime scene while investigators and the coroner’s office worked at the residence. Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell said there was no threat to the community, but also emphasized that the investigation was ongoing and that authorities were still contacting family members before releasing further information.
Curtis was also known as Danny Bates. His obituary said he was born March 23, 1952, in Limestone County, belonged to Tanner Church of Christ, served in the Alabama National Guard, and had retired from TVA and from Limestone County Schools, where he worked as a bus driver. It also described a life tied closely to the land, saying he enjoyed farming and raising cattle and horses. Sabrina Bates’ obituary said she also lived in Athens, died at home the same day, and had worked for several Limestone County offices, including the Sheriff’s Office, Probate Judge, Council on Aging, and County Commission.
As of the available reporting, police had not announced any arrests, publicly named a suspect, or released charges in connection with Curtis Bates’ death. The available official and local reporting framed the case as an active death investigation involving two fatal gunshot victims found inside the same residence.
