In the winter of 2018, the life of 34-year-old Darius Allen, a male resident of Athens, Alabama, was cut short in a targeted act of violence. On the night of Tuesday, January 30th, Allen was shot, and his vehicle was subsequently involved in a wreck. Emergency responders discovered him at the scene, but he was already deceased, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his abdomen and right leg.
The investigation into Allen's death quickly pointed to a complex and personal motive.
Authorities revealed that the shooting was not a random act but stemmed from a troubled relationship. Investigators believe that a relationship existed between Allen's wife and a man named Antonio Jacobs. This relationship was a source of conflict, and tensions escalated when Jacobs came to believe that Allen had fired shots into his home on Cannon Road the weekend prior to the murder. This incident was reported to the Sheriff's Department and is considered the primary motive behind the fatal shooting.
Within days of the murder, the Athens Police Department made two arrests in connection with the case. The first suspect taken into custody was Antonio Jacobs. Shortly after, a second man, 39-year-old Dewayne Lee Sloan of Athens, was also arrested. Both men were charged with capital murder in the death of Darius Allen. The investigation continued after the arrests, with law enforcement working to piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation. An investigator later characterized the killing as an 'eye for an eye' retaliation. Allen's wife, Jacqueline Allen, reportedly told investigators that Jacobs and Sloan had intentionally pursued and murdered her husband.
