On June 3, 1970, Lieutenant Moitt Brenton Truitt, Jr., a 27-year-old officer with the Opelika Police Department, lost his life in the line of duty. The incident began when Lt. Truitt, along with other officers, responded to a call to check on the welfare of George R. Findley, who had not been seen for several days and was reported to be ill. Findley's sister had informed the police that she could not get anyone to answer the door at his residence on Auburn Street.
