On June 28, 1970, Corporal Thomas Odean Gillilan, a 38-year-old officer with the Alabama Department of Public Safety, conducted a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 331 in Crenshaw County, Alabama. During this stop, the driver, a 22-year-old male, overpowered Corporal Gillilan, seized his service weapon, and shot him. Critically injured, Corporal Gillilan was transported to a hospital in Montgomery, where he succumbed to his injuries three days later, on July 1, 1970.
