It was a tragically normal morning in Pelham, Alabama, on August 5, 1999, when the life of 39-year-old Terry Jarvis was cut short in a wave of violence that swept through two local businesses. A delivery truck driver named Alan Eugene Miller, then 34, began a shooting rampage that would ultimately claim the lives of three men. Jarvis, a male resident of Montevallo, Alabama, was one of those victims, caught in a senseless act of workplace violence.
The deadly chain of events began at
Ferguson Enterprises, a wholesale distributor of plumbing and heating equipment where Miller was employed. There, he fatally shot two of his colleagues, Lee Holbrooks, 32, and Christopher Yancy, 28. While police were responding to the chaos at Ferguson Enterprises, another emergency call came in, this time from Post Airgas, a company that sold industrial and medical gases. Miller had previously worked at this location. It was here that Terry Jarvis was found, another victim of Miller's murderous spree.
The manhunt for Alan Eugene Miller was brief. He was apprehended by police on Interstate 65 in nearby Chilton County after a short chase. A gun was recovered from his vehicle, and he was taken into custody, reportedly struggling with officers during his arrest. Miller was subsequently charged with three counts of capital murder. During the investigation, it was revealed that Miller's motive was reportedly anger over rumors he believed were being spread about him by his coworkers. Friends of the victims suggested Miller was upset about what he perceived as better delivery routes being given to others.
Alan Eugene Miller was indicted on one count of capital murder, as the three killings were considered part of a single course of action. He initially pleaded innocent by reason of mental disease or defect. Following legal proceedings, he was convicted of the murders of Terry Jarvis, Lee Holdbrooks, and Christopher Yancy. After more than two decades on death row, Alan Eugene Miller was executed for his crimes on September 26, 2024, by nitrogen hypoxia. Authorities stated that Miller confessed after his arrest, expressing a sense of relief after carrying out the killings.
