Deon Levonte King-Smith, a 32-year-old Black man, died in Pelham, Alabama, on March 5, 2023, after a violent confrontation in the predawn hours at the Extended Stay America on Bishop Circle. What began as an argument reportedly centered on a cellphone turned deadly just before 5:00 a.m., drawing Pelham police officers and fire medics to the hotel.
