On March 5, 2023, 32-year-old Deon Lavonte King-Smith was fatally shot during an argument over a cellphone at the Extended Stay America hotel located at 101 Bishop Circle in Pelham, Alabama. The incident occurred shortly before 5:00 a.m., prompting a swift response from Pelham police and fire medics. Upon arrival, officers found King-Smith suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
