On a summer morning in Pelham, Alabama, the life of 32-year-old Lee Michael Holdbrooks was violently cut short. On August 5, 1999, a co-worker named Alan Eugene Miller, a delivery truck driver, arrived at their workplace, Ferguson Enterprises, and began a shooting spree. Holdbrooks was the first person Miller encountered. After an exchange of words, Miller shot Holdbrooks multiple times in the chest and head.
Despite his severe injuries, Holdbrooks attempted to crawl to an exit, leaving a trail of blood down the hallway. Miller then stood over him and fired a final, fatal shot to the head as Holdbrooks looked up at him.
The rampage did not end with Holdbrooks. Miller also shot and killed another co-worker, 28-year-old Christopher 'Scott' Yancy, who was found in an office. After leaving Ferguson Enterprises, Miller drove to his former workplace, Post Airgas, where he shot and killed 39-year-old Terry Jarvis. The motive for the killings was reportedly Miller's anger over perceived rumors being spread about him by his victims. He was also allegedly angry that Holdbrooks was receiving what he considered to be better and longer delivery routes.
Alan Eugene Miller was apprehended by police shortly after the shootings on nearby Interstate 65. He confessed to the murders, stating that he felt a sense of relief after carrying them out. Miller was charged with three counts of capital murder. During his trial, his defense attorneys argued that he had a mental disease or defect, but he was ultimately convicted. A jury recommended the death penalty by a vote of 10-2, and the judge accepted the recommendation.
After more than two decades of legal processes and a failed lethal injection attempt in 2022, Alan Eugene Miller was executed on September 26, 2024. He had selected nitrogen hypoxia as his method of execution, a choice that became available to death row inmates in Alabama in 2018. Following the execution, state officials expressed that justice had been served for the three families forever altered by Miller's heinous crimes.
