On the morning of August 5, 1999, in Pelham, Alabama, 32-year-old Lee Holdbrooks was at his workplace, Ferguson Enterprises, a heating and air-conditioning distributor. At approximately 7:00 a.m., Alan Eugene Miller, a delivery truck driver employed at the same company, entered the building armed with a .40-caliber Glock pistol.
