On February 15, 2002, Alan Bates, 30, and his wife, Terra, 31, were murdered in Hoover, Alabama. The couple had traveled from their home in Frederick, Maryland, to Birmingham for depositions related to a contentious child custody dispute between Alan and his ex-wife, Jessica McCord, over their two daughters. After arriving in Birmingham, they visited Jessica's residence to pick up the children for a planned weekend visit.
