A bitter child custody dispute culminated in the tragic deaths of 30-year-old Alan Bates and his wife, Terra Klugh Bates, also 30. The male victim, a theater production manager, was embroiled in a contentious battle with his ex-wife, Jessica McCord, over the visitation of their two young daughters. This long-standing conflict would ultimately lead to a meticulously planned and cold-blooded murder.
On February 15, 2002, Alan and Terra Bates traveled to Hoover, Alabama, for a pre-arranged
visit to pick up his children. They were lured into the home of Jessica McCord and her new husband, Jeff McCord, who was a police officer. Inside the residence, the couple was ambushed and shot multiple times. Their bodies were then placed in the trunk of their rental car, which was driven to a rural area in Georgia, nearly 200 miles away. There, the car was set on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. The grim discovery of the burning vehicle with their remains was made on February 16, 2002.
Suspicion quickly fell upon Jessica and Jeff McCord. Their claims that Alan and Terra never arrived to pick up the children were met with skepticism by investigators. A search of the McCords' home revealed evidence of a cleanup, including recently pulled-up carpeting and newly wallpapered walls, as well as minute blood spatters that were later matched to the victims. The investigation led to the arrest of both Jessica and Jeff McCord, who were charged with the murders.
During the subsequent trial, prosecutors argued that Jessica McCord orchestrated the killings out of resentment over losing custody of her daughters. Although Jeff McCord was the one who fired the fatal shots, the prosecution maintained that Jessica was the driving force behind the plot. In February 2003, exactly one year after the murders, a jury found Jessica McCord guilty of two counts of capital murder. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Jeff McCord pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder to avoid the death penalty and also received a sentence of life in prison. His request for parole was later denied.
